U.S. Is Urged to Raise Teachers' Status
To improve its public schools, the United States should raise the status of the teaching profession by recruiting more qualified candidates, training them better and paying them more, according to a new report on comparative educational systems. And the country that is universally acknowledged as the international "gold standard" in education –Finland—is entirely unionized.

Notice of the Supreme Court Race

We are all busy with other matters, but here is a statewide printout of school district losses due to proposed changes in revenue controls. Note that some schools will lose $480 per pupil, while others see losses of more than $800. North Lakeland experiences a reduction of more than $1,000 per pupil. This range occurs when an across-the-board 5.5% reduction is applied to different levels of per pupil expenditures found in Wisconsin's school districts--irrespective of what it costs to educate each child in different districts. In this regard, the proposal is highly dis-equalizing, with some districts seeing much greater per pupil losses than others. The policy, in other words, is far from well crafted.
